To Hold Selves
$1,700

Description

To Hold Selves is a sculpture, designed to be an unwearable neck collar. Drawing on Barzakh’s earliest design instincts—deconstruction and fragmentation—the piece resembles scaffolding undone: steel rods warped by relentless winds, bound together with scoby, a living membrane-like material. To Hold Selves appears to have endured countless histories, resulting in an appearance born from the accumulation of stories.

About
Based in the United Arab Emirates, barzakh makes modern relics. Their name comes from the Arabic word barzakh--a state of liminality, an isthmus between worlds; the brand straddles the modern and ancient. Barzakh’s designs feature tusk-like ornaments and sand-blasted metallic finishes, evoking artifacts weathered by time and desert winds. Bold, monolithic, and enigmatic, each piece distills antiquity into a modern form. The brand uses recycled sterling silver, which further reinforces its connection to time (also more sustainable :D).
